Even if I weren't a Christian, I wouldn't go with Judas. Apart from biblically, I've only ever heard it used as an insult or sarcasm. Honestly, a name doesn't determine their destiny, and I'm wouldn't name him that to go against the Bible, I just love the name.
So if it's a boy, I'm definitely gonna go for it! Where did you come from? How did you find this post over a year later? Are you a July mom? Why does this keep happening?
A name doesn't determine destiny but are you truly ok with your child's name being something people use as an insult. Whatever makes you happy! Just be prepared for him to run into some negativity with it throughout his lifetime. I'm sorry I really like the name but at least in America and probably any country where Christianity is prevalent Judas means an evil person, a friend who would betray you. I'm an atheist but that is the only thing I think of when I hear the name. It's still a quite common insult to throw in someone's face.
I just saw one of those stupid slideshow click baits on names people regret giving their kid. Cain was one of them because people viewed it as evil because Cain killed his brother in the Bible.
I never would associate Cain in that way but apparently many people do. Judas on the other hand has an instant evil association in my mind. I've never heard anyone named judas and I think it's because it has such negative connotations.
Which is a shame, as if you didn't know the meaning, it'd be a great name! If you like the name then of course, it's your choice, but it may end up giving them a disadvantage in life. I love Jude or even Joseph. Another unusual name is Gabriel, gabe for short. We strive to provide you with a high quality community experience. I would have no problem or prejudice with an upright man who is called Judas.
He is a leader, an innovator and a man who everyone else wishes to be. His perseverance is almost unmatched and stands alone, content with ridicule because he knows that lashing out does not bring peace. If I were to give him a nickname it would be "heart and muscle. Judas Maccabeus was one of the first leaders of the Maccabean revolt.
I once heard that most historians believe Jesus had two apostles named Judas, but he changed one's name to Thaddeus to distinguish him from Judas Iscariot.
Who would name their kid after a Lady Gaga song?! I hope the poster above me was joking. If anyone were insane enough to name their child this, it would most likely be after the character in the bible, not a lady gaga song! Ridiculous how ignorant some people are. If my last name were Priest, I would totally name my kid this.
Well, to step away from the Biblical discussions above, here is something on the usage of the name: Lady GaGa released a single called "Judas. In response to what someone said previously, I think it is sick that anyone would think it is fun to name your child Judas just to piss people off. Judas Iscariot did not betray Jesus. It's been found that Jesus specifically spoke to Judas telling him that he Judas must be the one to reveal him Jesus to the Romans so he could die for the sins of mankind.
Judas was a hero, in a way. Judas Maccabaeus was one of the greatest Jewish heroes in the Old Testament he was responsible for re-establishing Israel's independence by kicking out the Greeks. However the Book of Maccabees is not considered to be part of the Bible by Protestants but it is by Catholics. This name disgusts me. I don't know why a few people like this. It is too heavily associated with Judas Iscariot and no one else.
I think this is a terrible name that wouldn't reflect well. Judas is the name of the very mean dog who belongs to the horrible abusive Garbos in Jerzy Kosinski's haunting novel 'The Painted Bird. I don't understand why somebody would be against naming their child Judas because it just happened to be the name of a man who lived 2, years ago who may or may not have betrayed another man which certain people see as some sort of savior.
The fact is, it's a beautiful name that has belonged to many good people. Yes, an event occurred a millennium ago that some people interpret a certain way but realize, there is going to be negative connotations with any name.
Be mature people.
